Preface This is the second edition of CSA 056, Round wood piles . It supersedes the previous edition published in 1962 and replaces CSA O56-M79, Round wood piles. The major changes in this edition include the following: (a) The 1962 imperial and 1979 metric editions of the Standard have been consolidated, and metric dimensions have been further refined to accommodate established imperial dimensions and measurements. (b) The definitions clause has been expanded, and terminology has been made consistent with other CSA wood standards. (c) In Table A.1, the metric size designation size 27 has changed to 28; the associated criteria and the imperial values have not been changed. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 This Standard covers material, manufacturing, and dimensional requirements for untreated and treated round wood piles. 1.2 This Standard does not cover requirements for the preservative treatment of piles. Such requirements are specified in the CAN/CSA-O80 Series of Standards. 1.3 In CSA standards, \"shall\" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; \"should\" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and \"may\" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (nonmandatory) to define their application. 1.4 The values given in SI (metric) units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
