Sets out recommendations related to the safety and health of all persons involved in activities in workrooms of schools, colleges and universities. It provides general guidelines for administrators, instructors and students on safe working practices and accident prevention methods and lists the appropriate considerations to be given to the provision of personal protection of instructors and students against certain hazards and harmful agents. General requirements relating to environmental factors and to equipment and services are given, together with specific requirements for safety in particular areas, including laboratories, equipment in general use (e.g. portable tools), metalworking, woodworking, areas where there are harmful substances and processes, forging, welding, foundry work, automotive engineering, ancillary plant and equipment (e.g. cranes, slings), graphic arts, and catering.

This standard sets out recommendations related to the safety and health of all persons engaged in operations or activities in workrooms of educational establishments. It deals in general with-(a) administration and general requirements;(b) environmental factors; and(c) equipment in general use.It also covers specific areas where definite safety measures are required such as-(i) laboratories;(ii) handling of harmful substances;(iii) using metalworking and woodworking machinery;(iv) forging, welding and casting processes;(v) automotive engineering;(vi) use of ancillary plant and equipment;(vii) graphic arts; and(viii) catering. The recommendations set out in this standard also apply to university workshops where appropriate, and to experimental work carried out in university laboratories.
