Amalgamates the four compressed gas cylinder identification Standards into the one Standard. As a consequence of this amalgamation, AS 1942, AS 1943, AS 1944 and AS 2992 are withdrawn. The Standard stresses that the cylinder label is to be the primary means of identification and safety information whilst colour is only to be used as a secondary means of identification.

This Standard specifies the markings or labels as the primary identification method and a colour code as the secondary method to identify the contents of compressed gas cylinders to be used in Australia in accordance with AS 2030.1, AS 2030.2 and AS 2030.3 for storage of refrigerant, industrial and medical gases. The cylinders are of water capacity from 0.1 kg to, but not exceeding 150 kg. Cylinders or containers above water capacity of 150 kg may follow this Standard or be in accordance with the Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Rail and Road (ADG Code) and the appropriate safety code. The markings also provide identification of cylinders for liquid withdrawal fitted with eductor tubes. This Standard covers colours of paint applied to cylinders filled, used and colour coded in Australia. This Standard is not intended to apply to cylinders concerned with self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA), self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or for portable fire extinguishers, for identification of these cylinders. Reference should be made to the particular product or application Standard. It also excludes liquid petroleum gas (LPG) in a cylinder 12 kg water capacity or less, which are usually considered to be for domestic use and are finished in a range of colours.
