The current Australian and New Zealand Standard for cots AS/NZS 2172:1995 was published in 1995 and work began to trial new test methods for the Standard in 1999.

The revision of AS/NZS 2172:1995 is at postal ballot stage, but has been blocked by many issues mainly related to difficulty obtaining consistency of test results for new tests. The revisions are being designed to adopt test methods that gave an objective Yes or No answer to the particular aspect of the cot under test, rather than previous requirements which in some cases involved subjectivity. This has not proven to be simple and the committee are not prepared to sacrifice the safety of the product to save time or money.

There are currently 25 organisations involved in the revision process with work taking place in the form of face to face meetings, separate working group meetings, product testing trials, and electronic drafting of new clauses and test methods.
