AS/NZS 3086:1996

Describes a generic premises cabling system for connecting one to four exchange access lines to various types of customer equipment (at various locations) within single premises or, for multi-occupancy buildings, within each occupant's part of the premises. It specifies physical interfaces, connecting techniques and installation methods for telecommunications cabling of individual buildings.

ScopeThis Standard covers telecommunications wiring systems installed within an individual building with residential (single, multi-unit or home office) and light commercial (small office, manufacturing, store, retail, etc.) end use. It does not apply to caravan parks or marinas. Installation of basic telephone services not intended for advanced applications or integrated services is not the subject of this Standard.This Standard is applicable to the distribution of one to four lines within a single building and may also be applied to multiple-occupancy buildings containing individual living units or offices where the number of lines per unit/office typically does not exceed four lines.Cabling to this Standard will support ISDN point to point wiring configuration and may support other configurations (refer to requirements of selected carrier).Installation of wiring and telecommunications outlets beyond the exterior walls of buildings (e.g. between buildings) is not covered by this Standard nor are backbone cable systems. (For integrated telecommunication cabling systems to serve large commercial premises and for telecommunications pathways and spaces for commercial buildings see AS/NZS 3080 and AS 3084 respectively.)ApplicationThis Standard is intended to be used by a broad range of persons having an interest in telecommunications wiring, such as carriers, equipment designers and manufacturers, building owners and contractors and companies involved in the sale, installation and maintenance of telecommunications equipment and services.This Standard is intended to be implemented on new construction of, and additions to, residential and light commercial buildings, and on any subsequent rearrangement thereof.In Australia, mandatory Standards apply to the installation of cable and equipment intended for connection to carriers' networks and are covered in AUSTEL Technical Standards TS 008 and TS 009.It should be noted that to perform cabling work (in Australia) which is connected to, or intended for connection to, a telecommunications network operated by a carrier, the cabler shall hold an appropriate AUSTEL cabling licence applicable to the installation being carried out.In New Zealand, certain requirements additional to this Standard are mandated in Codes of Practice of the carrier providing local telephony service. New Zealand Telecom PTC 103 applies to basic residential wiring.
