Specifies safety requirements for foot warmers and and heating mats. This Standard is technically equivalent to and has been reproduced from IEC 60335-2-81:1997.

This clause of part 1 is replaced by:This standard deals with the safety of electric foot warmers and heating mats for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V. Appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard. So far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances which are encountered by all persons in and around the home. This standard does not in general take into accountû the use of appliances by young children without supervision;û playing with the appliance by young children. NOTE 1 û Attention is drawn to the fact thatû for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary;û for appliances intended to be used in tropical countries, special requirements may be necessary;û for the purpose of this Standard, Australian and New Zealand are not considered to be tropical;û in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour, and similar authorities.NOTE 2 û This standard does not apply toû appliances specifically intended for use under medical supervision;-electric blankets and pads (IEC 60335-2-17);û electric blankets and pads (AS/NZS 3164);û electrically heated carpets;û electrical heating appliances for breeding and rearing animals (IEC 60335-2-71).
