Research and development involves the use of a large number of different methods to test wear, ranging from field test under actual service conditions to model tests on simple specimens. As a rule, the results of a wear test should be taken to refer solely to the given wear case, since such results generally cannot be directly applied to other wear cases. The aim is to elucidate the potentialities and limitations of the various methods of testing wear, and these methods have accordingly been graded into six categories. Owing to the complexity of tribological systems, however, the said categories can only represent a general scheme of classification.
