Die Norm dient dazu, die Anzahl von Magnetbändern verschiedener äusserer Abmessungen zu beschränken und gleichzeitig die wichtigsten Anforderungen an die mechanischen Eigenschaften der Magnetbänder festzulegen. Sie gilt für Magnetbänder zur Messwertspeicherung. (Die entsprechende Norm über Magnetbänder zur Speicherung digitaler Daten ist DIN 66 011 Blatt 1). Durch das Vereinheitlichen der Magnetbänder soll ihr Austausch zwischen Geräten verschiedener Hersteller ermöglicht werden. Der Austausch von Magnetbändern, auf denen Informationen aufgezeichnet sind, erfordert darüber hinaus noch weitere Angaben, die in besonderen Nonnen festgelegt werden.
