La prsente Norme internationale spcifie les caractristiques physiques et magntiques d'une cartouche bande magntique de 12,7 mm de large, 48 pistes, dans le but de permettre l'interchangeabilit de telles cartouches. Elle spcifie galement la qualit des signaux enregistrs, un format appel Bande Linaire Numrique 1 (DLT1) et une mthode d'enregistrement. Associe une norme d'tiquetage, comme par exemple la Norme internationale ISO 1001 pour la structure de volumes et de fichiers des bandes magntiques, elle permet un change total de donnes au moyen de telles cartouches bande magntique.
