La présente Norme internationale donne des lignes directrices pour l'utilisation de palettes pour le fret aérien, destinées à être transportées à bord d'aéronefs de transport civils. Elle identifie les différents points à prendre en compte pour assurer la sécurité des vols et fournit, pour y parvenir, des méthodes normalisées reconnues par l'industrie. Des exigences commerciales permettant d'assurer la protection des marchandises transportées peuvent également être évoquées s'il y a lieu, mais cet aspect ne constitue pas l'objectif premier du document, dont le but est de fournir des lignes directrices visant une pratique normalisée et qui est susceptible d'évoluer au rythme de l'expérience acquise et des progrès techniques.
