Establishes the rules, defines the data elements and punctuation, and describes the display conventions for non-serial items, therefore a library's holdings of non-serials will be described in a consistent way. A companion standard to Z39.44-1986 on serial publications, the conventions set forth in Z39.57 can be used in either a manual or automated holding system.
