This British Standard specifies requirements for the designation, testing, factory production control, installation manual, deployment instructions, user manual and marking for different types and configurations of flood resistance products.

This British Standard specifies requirements for the designation, testing, factory production control, installation manual, deployment instructions, user manual and marking for different types and configurations of flood resistance products.

This British Standard is applicable to flood resistance products intended for either temporary installation or to be demountable, for use away from buildings but where they could be sealed against structures or buildings at section ends, in the UK or locations with similar exposures, i.e. where there is a temperate climate.

This British Standard specifies the method of testing and an allowable leakage rate.

NOTE1 The test conditions given in Annex A represent typical conditions that can be experienced during a flood. This includes testing the flood resistance product on a concrete base for leakage and structural failure under static water levels, random waves up to 0.1m high and parallel currents up to 1.0m/s.

NOTE2 This British Standard does not cover testing with contaminated or saline water; however, product manufacturers are required to provide information about the performance of their products in these conditions (seeAnnexB).

NOTE3 Flood resistance products that conform to this British Standard might not be suitable for all locations, exposures and foundation types, for example the primary defence systems for coastal areas, where damage might occur from shingle.

NOTE4 Perimeter barrier systems are normally installed in conjunction with a pumping arrangement to manage any water behind the barrier such as leakage, surface water and groundwater.

NOTE5 The flood protection products described in this British Standard are not intended to provide permanent flood protection. These flood protection products are installed or activated in the event of an imminent flood and removed or deactivated as soon as danger from flooding is over.

NOTE6 Attention is drawn to the need for designers and installers to comply with relevant planning and permitting requirements.

This British Standard is not applicable to flood resistance products for installation across building apertures such as individual doors, windows, airbricks and air vents or building skirts. These are covered by BS851188‑1.
