The method specified serves to determine the Fraass breaking point of bitumen. It may also be used for preparations of special straight-run coal tar, such as road tar, non-ageing road tar, pitch/bitumen and bitumen/pitch mixtures. The breaking point provides an indication of the rheological behaviour of such binders at low temperatures. The method is only conditionally applicable to binders that contain filling material, and precision levels differing from those specified in clause 9 are then to be expected; the greater the particle size and the larger the proportion of filling material, the less accurate are the results likely to be.
