The test method described serves to determine the standard thickness of floor coverings which conform to DIN 61151, which is a parameters of fundamental importance. The test method can be applied to investigate variations in thickness which arise through wear under laboratory conditions or in actual use. Values of thickness measurement also serve as reference quantities in the calculation of other related values, e.g. the decrease in thickness of textile floor coverings under static pressure (see DIN 54316), the density of flat carpets (see DIN 53855 Part 1), and the thickness and density (and related data) of the (effective) pile of pile carpets (see DIN 54317 and DIN 54325).
