Applies to the concept of ensuring electrical safety in hazardous areas by means of type of protection 'e' and offers guidance in the installation and maintenance of protected apparatus in hazardous areas. It does not apply to underground mining, but may be applied to certain surface mining installations. For the purpose of the Standard, explosion risks due to the presence of combustible gases and vapour only are considered.

This Part of the code applies to the concept of ensuring electrical safety in hazardous areas by means of Type of Protection 'e': Increased Safety, and offers guidance in the installation and maintenance of electrical apparatus in hazardous areas which is protected in accordance with the requirements of this type of protection.The recommendations of the code may not apply to the underground mining industry, where other precautions are necessary, though it is recognized that the recommendations of the code may be applied to the surface installations of mines.For the purposes of this Part of the code, explosion risks due to the presence of combustible gases and vapours only are considered. Combustible dusts are therefore excluded except where otherwise noted (see also Part 10 of the code).
