Sets out the qualities and performance aspects that will ensure safety, promote efficient usage, extend life and facilitate maintenance. It also sets out the requirements of Australian Standards which are generally applied by Australian statutory authorities in respect of the electrical equipment of industrial machines designed for connection to supply voltages not exceeding 1000 V. For this reason it is of particular interest to overseas industrial machine manufacturers who wish to market their products in Australia.

This standard sets out the requirements of those Australian standards that are generally applied by Australian statutory authorities in respect of electrical equipment of non-portable machines or machine assemblies which are intended for industrial use either occasionally or in production lines and which are designed for connection to supply voltages not exceeding 1000 V between lines, and frequencies not exceeding 200 Hz.In addition, the standard details those quality and performance aspects that will-(a) ensure safety of personnel;(b) promote effective and efficient usage of such equipment;(c) help obtain long life of all equipment; and(d) facilitate maintenance at minimum cost.The electrical equipment covered by this standard includes all motors, control devices, circuit wiring, control panels, and other electrical and electronic apparatus and materials extending to and including the machine isolating switch. Electronic equipment may include the following components which are used in control circuits or in power circuits:(i) Electronic devices.(ii) Static control units and equipment.(iii) Programmable controllers.(iv) Magnetic amplifiers.(v) Equipment and units associated electrically and mechanically with the electronic circuits (transducers, low-current electromagnetic relays, transformers, resistors, potentiometers, position sensors, servo components, etc).NOTE: Applications of these components include the variable speed control of spindle and feed motors, the programmed sequence and positioning of controls, the numerical control of machine tools, and safety equipment.The standard does not include requirements relating to the performance of an industrial machine as a whole, and is not intended to unduly restrict design or limit manufacturing ingenuity.Examples of industrial machines, the electrical and electronic equipment of which is within the scope of this standard, are machines for: - metalworking - woodworking - moulding and extruding of plastics and other materials - manufacturing of products from plastics, leather, rubber, paper and their derivatives - foundries- textile and clothing industries - printing - food and allied industries - packaging- materials handling (transporting and storage) - manipulating and assembling (including robots) - quality control.Additional requirements are given in other relevant standards for the electrical and electronic equipment of machines which: - are used in open air - use or produce explosive and combustible material, e.g. paint or sawdust - are used in mines - are used in hazardous areas, e.g. in explosive gas atmospheres.Excluded from the scope of this standard are:- power circuits where electrical power is directly used as a working tool, e.g. welding, electrical discharge, electrochemical processes - the electrical and electronic equipment or parts of such equipment used for production and distribution of electrical energy - machines (devices, equipment) used for transportation of persons - conveyors, unless associated with machinery included above.
