Specifies requirements for the design, installation, and commissioning of automatic fire detection systems. Definitions, general requirements applicable to all systems, and specific requirements for heat detection, smoke detection, and flame detection systems are given. Appendices set out recommendations on the selection of types of thermal detectors and on the application of smoke and flame detectors, together with a standard form of installer's statement for a fire alarm system, fire alarm symbols, and commissioning test report.

This standard sets out requirements for the system design, installation, and commissioning of automatic fire detection and alarm systems and components that are manufactured in accordance with AS 1603.
