Specifies the functional properties of various safety glazing materials, including toughened glass, laminated glass, wired glass, organic-coated glass and plastics. Two grades are covered, with different impact performance levels. Other requirements include size tolerances, weathering and ageing performance. Test methods are given in appendices, and other appendices deal with sampling and acceptance procedures, notes on the storage and handling of toughened safety glass, and notes on safe performance criteria and human dynamics data.

This specification sets out performance requirements, test methods and labelling requirements for safety glazing materials for use in buildings in areas where human impact is likely. The materials specified are glazing panels designed to promote safety and to reduce or minimize the likelihood of cutting and piercing injuries from human impact.Clear, tinted and patterned safety glazing materials, and opaque glazing materials used as spandrel panels in locations subject to human impact are included in this specification.Glazing materials such as sealants and beads are not specified herein. This specification does not specify the added precautions that may be necessary to combat fire hazards.NOTE: AS 1288 gives details of the thicknesses and type of material necessary for minimizing injury due to human impact and other special considerations.
