Provides information on the alarm systems available and the most suitable type to use in each circumstance. It is basically a non-technical guide and deals with what is to be protected, the methods available, the type of detector to use and the method of raising an alarm. Refers specifically to detectors of the switch, pressure mat, metallic foil, wire screen, microwave and ultrasonic motion, UHF radio motion, passive infrared motion, infrared photoelectric beam, sound, vibration and capacitance types. Includes a section rating the relative effectiveness of protection systems themselves, i.e. physical protection without alarm, cooperative, local alarm, automatic dialler, central station, and proprietary system with in-house security force.

This standard provides guidance on the selection and application of intruder alarm systems. It deals with and indicates the most appropriate type of equipment and method to be used for the three fundamental elements which are the detector, control unit and alarm.Although this standard has been written primarily with businesses in mind, in most cases the recommendations on selection of the intruder alarm system are equally applicable to the domestic situation.
