Specifies design, standard dimensions with tolerances, method of attachment, finish and marking requirements for shank-type 50 mm towballs which are used on motor vehicles for towing trailers up to 3.5 t aggregate trailer mass. A static test for longitudinal loading in tension and compression, and a dynamic test are given in the appendices.

This Standard specifies requirements for motor vehicles towing very light and light trailers of up to 3.5 t aggregate trailer mass by means of a ball coupling, in normal use on sealed and unsealed roads.NOTES:1 Towbars and coupling bodies are specified in AS 4177.1 and AS 4177.3 respectively.2 Requirements for off-road applications are beyond the scope of this Standard.3 Requirements for shank-type 50 mm towballs only are specified.4 Towing bracket and towballs complying with ISO 1103 and 3853 are also acceptable.
