Specifies requirements for the design, construction and performance of three-colour portable signal systems for use where temporary control of vehicular traffic is required, such as road or bridge works. Provides for the two main forms of control, viz. shuttle control and plant crossing control. Does not cover the use of these signal systems in specific road situations.

This Standard specifies requirements for the design, construction and performance of three-colour portable signal systems for use where temporary control of vehicular traffic is required, such as at road or bridge works. It provides for two main forms of control, viz. shuttle control and plant-crossing control. The Standard does not cover the use of portable traffic signal systems in specific road situations which is normally the subject of regulation by the relevant traffic authority.NOTES:1 See Appendix A for the information that should be supplied with an enquiry or order for portable traffic signal systems to the requirements of this Standard.2 Information on the basic system elements and operating principles of portable traffic signal systems is given in Appendix B.3 Guidance on the use of portable traffic signal systems is provided in AS 1742.3.
