Describes the principal performance characteristics of microwave ovens and sets out procedures for determining external dimensions, useable cavity volume, useable cavity dimensions, microwave power output, electrical power input, efficiency, uniformity of heating (three tests) and heating of beverages. It does not describe cooking tests. It reproduces a substantial portion of IEC 705:1988, including Amendments 1 and 2. The remainder of the IEC document is reproduced in AS/NZS 2895.3.

This standard applies to appliances for heating food and beverages, by electromagnetic energy (microwaves) in one or more of the I.S.M. frequency bands between 300 MHz and 30 GHz, for household use. These appliances may also use thermal cooking means as employed in conventional cooking ranges and ovens for household use. They may also incorporate a browning function. This standard also applies to combination microwave ovens when used in the microwave generating mode only. For such ovens the relevant sections of IEC Publication 350 may also apply. This standard does not apply to microwave ovens which cannot accept a load having a diameter of 200 mm.
