Specifies essential safety requirements for approval and test purposes. It is to be read in conjunction with AS 3100.

This Standard applies to electric cooking appliances, as defined in Clause 4.1, which are designed for connection to low voltage supply.It applies to electric cooking appliances such as electric ranges, ovens, cooking tables, hotplate hob units, grill boiler units, deep fryers, frypans, rotisserie cookers, cake makers, contact type griddle and toasting plates, waffle irons, some steam pressure cookers, plate and food warmers and grillers.This Standard does not apply to the following:(a) Electric bread toasters within the scope of AS 3101 (NZS/AS 3101).(b) Electric portable immersion heaters within the scope of AS 3104.(c) Electric jugs within the scope of AS 3106.(d) Appliances for heating liquids within the scope of AS 3313/NZS 6315.For the purpose of this Standard, an electric cooking appliance for household use is referred to as an appliance.NOTE: An appliance in the form of a container incorporating a sheathed element with provision for earthing the sheath is within the scope of this Standard even though it may have a non-metallic body and may resemble an electric jug.
