La prova è suddivisa in due metodi, il primo simula le cadute che un oggetto, generalmente non imballato, può subire durante la manipolazione, il secondo metodo simula le cadute ripetute cui possono essere sottoposti certi dispositivi, come commettori o piccole unità di controllo a distanza, che durante l'uso sono normalmente fissate a un cavo.
