The test method described is designed to determine the change in thickness of mineral fibre insulating materials caused by the action of heat under compression stress as a result of softening, alteration of texture or chemical changes as a function of time and temperature. Depending on the application of the insulating material concerned, the specimen is heated either on all sides or on one side only. It can be tested either at a steadily rising temperature (short-duration test) or at constant temperature (long-duration test). The test temperature for the long-duration test is usually governed by the behaviour of the specimen during a short-duration test.
