Die Prüfung nach dieser Norm dient zur Bestimmung der Torsionssteifheit von Kunststoffen als Mass für ihre Steifheit in einem grossen Temperaturbereich, insbesondere von weichen Kunststoffen (z. B. weichmacherhaltigem Polyvinylchlorid (PVC weich) unterhalb von 0 grad C. Ausserdem kann damit für die Materialkontrolle oder -entwicklung die Temperatur bestimmt werden, bei der der Probekörper eine ausgewählte Torsionssteifheit aufweist.
