Diese zweite Ausgabe ersetzt die 2006 herausgegebene IEC 61996-2 und stellt eine technische Überarbeitung dar. Insbesondere enthält sie eine neue Anforderung für eine Schnittstelle, die zum Laden der gespeicherten Daten auf einen externen Computer genutzt wird. Damit wird eine 2005 eingeführte IMO-Anforderung unterstützt, die für Schiffsausrüstungen ab Juni 2008 verbindlich wird. Eine entsprechende Überarbeitung wurde an der IEC 61996-1 für VDR vorgenommen.
