Proposes background to the proposed Standard and helpful information for design engineers or other appropriately qualified persons and those writing specifications for the installation of vitrified clay pipelines. Emphasis is placed on the need, particularly with non-granular bedding, for achieving in the field support conditions consistent with the assumptions of which the equations in the proposed Standard are based. An appendix gives worked examples which illustrate the load calculations and how the calculated values are used to select an appropriate class of pipes and fittings for a particular pipeline.
