Specifies requirements for metallic twisted-pair cables intended for telecommunications installations to be connected to carrier networks. It specifies minimum performance levels required to support voice transmission and low-speed data services including basic rate ISDN operation, and also the more stringent performance criteria for primary rate ISDN access. The cables may be used inside buildings and in underground or aerial locations. Companion Standards deal with coaxial and optical fibre cables.
