Presents generic criteria for a particular type of SONET equipment called a SONET Add-Drop Multiplexer (ADM) or its functional equivalent. A SONET ADM is a Network Element (NE) that provides either one or two "high-speed" SONET interfaces, as well as "tributary" interfaces at one or more of the various rates supported in the digital network. SONET ADMs are especially prolific in Core and Access Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) in ring configurations.
