This publication has been written with the purpose of assisting in the production of high quality asphalt pavements and is the result of cooperative effort between Austroads and the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA). In the past 20 years, there has been a substantial improvement to asphalt technology. This includes such advances as the introduction of new materials and additives, better characterisation techniques for materials, new structural and mix design procedures and an increase in the use of recycling. The Asphalt Guide addresses: the nature of asphalt materials and operating environment; selection of asphalt treatments and performance parameters; material constituents and their characteristics; asphalt mix design, including specialised mixes; mixing plants and production; paving planning, preparation, paver operation, spreading and compaction; maintenance of asphalt surfacings; asphalt recycling and quality management for asphalt supply, testing and contract surveillance. At 173 pages, the Asphalt Guide is a comprehensive manual to modern asphalt technology and provides a primary reference text for practitioners within the transport industry. It is also aimed at students studying asphalt for the first time.
