Survey of the existing standards environments that would affect the further development of standards to apply to devices used for telehealth purposes.

An extensive search of internet entries referring to telehealth and medical device standards and associated terms was undertaken in order to locate definitions, activities and standards which explicitly refer to this area. Findings from this search that duplicate the information contained in TR 2961-2007 have not been repeated here. There may well be other material and particular standards that are relevant but were not located on the basis of our online search. Some textual technical published material discussing telehealth was also perused when constructing this document but this represents only a small fraction of the total volume existing, due to limitations of time and availability. This resulting document summarizes those findings on the current status of standards environment of telehealth devices, particularly in the Australian context. It also articulates a set of challenges to be resolved by future work, which might undertake a more thorough review. It concludes with some recommendations for specific areas deserving higher priority attention, and suggests a way forward for achieving that objective.
