Applies to automatically or manually reset devices for use with a.c. motors having a rated output of 11 kW or less, and suitable for connection in an external circuit not exceeding 600 V for motors having a rated voltage not exceeding 3300 V, or in the motor circuit for motors having a rated voltage not exceeding 600 V. Tests for electrical properties, mechanical endurance, temperature rise and fire hazard are prescribed.

This specification applies to inherent overheat protectors, built into a.c. motors, together with their control units, forming part of a system of thermal protection of motors. They may be:(a) Connected in an external circuit of rated voltage not exceeding 600 V, of motors having a rated voltage not exceeding 3300 V and a rated output not exceeding 11 kW.(b) Connected in the motor circuit, the motor associated with the device having a rated voltage not exceeding 600 V and a rated output not exceeding 11 kW. The protectors may be automatically reset or manually reset. The protectors are responsive to motor heat alone or to a combination of motor heat plus the motor current passing through the device. This specification does not apply to inherent overheat protectors associated with sealed (hermetic) type compressor motors.NOTE: Appendix A sets out user data required for the application of inherent overheat protectors on single phase a.c. motors.
