Specifies requirements for self-contained portable electrically heated sterilizers that have an integral water storage, generate saturated steam at selected temperatures up to 134 degrees Celsius by an electrical heating unit within the sterilizing chamber and displace air by downwards displacement. These sterilizers are intended for use in hospitals, dental surgeries, medical surgeries and similar locations, generally for the sterilization of unwrapped instruments and utensils. They are not suitable for the sterilization of wrapped instruments and porous loads, unless a drying stage is provided. They should not be used to sterilize liquids or to decontaminate laboratory waste. Guidance on information that should be supplied with enquiries and orders, limitations of use, and quality of feed water for steam generation is given in Appendices.
