Specifies guidelines for the management and security of the Personal Identification Number (PIN) during its life cycle. Covers the following aspects of the PIN: generation, delivery and issuance, storage, entry techniques, verification, transmission, reversible encryption, destruction or deactivation, and journaling of transactions containing PIN data.

This standard specifies requirements for the management and security of personal identification numbers (PINs) used for authenticating customers who initiate card-originated electronic messages relating to financial transactions. It specifies a number of procedures for managing PINs, for using PINs to authenticate the initiator of a transaction, and for preventing unauthorized PIN disclosure by financial institutions handling PINs. This standard does not include requirements to protect PINs against loss or intentional misuse by either the customer or others who have access to PINs.This standard does not cover -(a) transaction message integrity (see AS 2805, Part 4); (b) key management (see AS 2805, Part 6); and (c) privacy assurance.
