Sets out the data items for electronically transferring information for a street address. Can be applied to databases. Contains items for person and organization details and postal delivery service. Does not apply to international addresses nor to allocation of addresses.

This Standard sets out the data items necessary to define the components in the transfer of information for a street address. The components have been grouped into three categories-personal, location and postal details. These three categories have been chosen to enable users of this Standard to minimize both the amount of data being transferred and the software to be written to support such a transfer. The three categories provide the facility to limit a data transfer to one of these categories, or to transfer data indexed to street addresses which are defined by one of the categories. Also, the numbering of the fields in the Standard provides an alternative method to transfer data associated with a particular field, or a specified group of fields. This would be achieved by using these numbered fields (complete with the relevant street addressing data) as an index to the associated data. The personal details are included in this Standard only because they are part of the mailing/billing address requirements of organizations such as Australia Post and local councils. However, the formats and conventions used for personal details in this Standard are designed purely for use in transferring addresses and are not necessarily suitable for other applications, such as transferring owner names. The fields listed within each category represent all identified needs. These fields are specified as a transfer standard for electronically stored address data. They do not have to restrict the way the fields are to be entered, stored or formatted in output reports on any individual application or system.Appendix A has been included to illustrate how data transferred in this Standard can be reformatted to comply with Australia Post's output requirements.Appendix B provides abbreviations for street types for use in transferring data electronically.NOTE: Appendix C is included to provide an overview to the fields and their structure.
