Specifies requirements for three grades of copper wire, which may be plain or tinned and one grade of copper alloy wire for general electrical purposes, supplied in forms other than straight lengths. It does not apply to wires intended for special applications such as those requiring enamelling or textile covering, nor does it apply to wires taken from stranded conductors, either bare or covered or from insulated cables and flexible cords. Chemical composition, mechanical and electrical properties and a hydrogen embrittlement test are specified, and appendices provide information on related specifications and testing.

This Standard specifies requirements for wires for general electrical purposes supplied in forms other than straight lengths and manufactured from materials of the following alloy designations, tempers and finish:Material Temper FinishOxygen-free electronic copper (C10100) annealed plain hard plainOxygen-free copper (C10200) annealed plain hard plainElectrolytic tough pitch copper (C11000) annealed plain or tinned hard plain or tinnedTin-bearing copper (149) hard plainThis Standard applies to wires which may be used in the production of insulated wires and cables and for other electrical applications. It does not apply to wires intended for special applications such as those requiring enamelling or textile covering nor does it apply to wires taken from stranded conductors, either bare or covered, or from insulated cables and flexible cords. The type of tin coating specified in this Standard is not intended as an assurance of solderability; its purpose is to provide corrosion resistance.NOTES:1 Advice and recommendations on information to be supplied by the purchaser at the time of enquiry or order are contained in Appendix A.2 Related composition specifications are given in Appendix B.
