La ISO 128 specifica la rappresentazione grafica di oggetti sui disegni tecnici allo scopo di facilitare lo scambio di informazioni a livello internazionale sui disegni e garantisce l'uniformità grazie ad un sistema chiaro e comprensibile applicabile a più funzioni tecniche. La presente parte della ISO 128 è applicabile a tutti i tipi di disegni tecnici, per esempio, quelli utilizzati nell'ingegneria meccanica e nelle costruzioni (architettura, ingegneria civile, costruzioni navali). La norma si applica sia ai disegni eseguiti manualmente sia a quelli assistiti all'elaboratore e non si applica ai modelli a 3D.
