Dieser Teil der IEC 61628 enthält die Begriffe, Kennzeichnungen und allgemeinen Anforderungen für Wellspan für elektrotechnische Zwecke. Materialien, die dieser Norm entsprechen, erfüllen nachgewiesene Stufen der Leistungsfähigkeit. Trotzdem sollte sich die Auswahl eines Materials für einen besonderen Anwendungsfall nach den tatsächlichen Anforderungen richten, die für eine angemessene Leistung in diesem Anwendungsfall erforderlich sind und nicht allein auf dieser Norm beruhen. Obwohl diese Materialien in erster Linie zur elektrischen Isolierung verwendet werden, sollte dies nicht dahingehend verstanden werden, sie nicht auch für andere Anwendungen einzusetzen, wenn sie sich aufgrund ihrer Eigenschaften hierfür eignen.
