Outlines the method of conducting the NDTT test on ferritic steels which show a fracture surface appearance transition from brittle to ductile. It describes methods for test piece preparation, gives dimensions of the brittle-weld bead crack-starter and the procedure for carrying out the test.

This standard describes the method of conducting the dropweight test for the determination of the nil-ductility transition temperature (NDTT) of ferritic steels which show a fracture appearance transition from brittle to ductile accompanied by a substantial change in fracture energy with rise in temperature. The test is applicable to plates, forgings, castings, sections and welded joints, where the thickness is 16 mm or greater.NOTE: With special modifications to the test and by agreement between the parties concerned on the interpretation of the results, the test has been used on thicknesses down to 12 mm and on test pieces of thickness greater than the standard test piece.Reference: PUZAK, P.P. and BABECK, A.J., 'Normalization Procedures for the NRL Drop-weight Test',Welding Journal, May 1959.The test consists of dropping a weight on to a test piece in the form of a simply supported beam having an embrittled notch on the tension surface to determine the highest temperature at which the test piece fractures to one or both edges of the tension surface.
