This Standard sets out a system of specifying the degree of protection provided by an enclosure of electrical equipment within the following categories: (a) Protection of persons against approach to live parts or contact with live or moving parts (other than smooth rotating shafts and the like) inside the enclosure. (b) Protection of equipment within the enclosure against the ingress of solid foreign bodies. (c) Protection of the equipment within the enclosure against the harmful ingress of water. It also specifies type tests to verify the performance of the various classes of enclosure.
