This Standard describes procedures for inspection and detection of termite activity and termite conducive conditions with a view to determining appropriate termite management options for a property. It is not intended for use in providing a pre-purchase inspection report for any timber pest. (The Standard for pre-purchase pest reports is AS 4349.3). It proposes methods for determining the extent of infestation, the treatment required and how to prevent infestation. It provides for both physical and chemical barriers which restrict the access of termites to timbers in either new or existing buildings. It gives details of notices and certificates to be used by builders and pest controllers, a code of practice for the safe use of termiticides, and a procedure for determining the level of chemical soil barriers.

This Standard specifies the procedures for the prevention, detection and treatment of subterranean termite infestation in buildings and other structures. It includes details for providing both physical barriers and chemical soil barriers which restrict termites from accessing timber and other termite susceptible materials in buildings. Barriers may be used singly or in combination to provide an integrated system for the protection of buildings. This Standard also sets out the steps to be followed to determine the extent of termite infestation in existing buildings, the type of treatment to eradicate termites and methods for the prevention of reinfestation by termites. All claims that work has been carried out in accordance with this Standard, or specified part thereof require certification. Details for the certification of treatment and a code of practice for the application of termiticides are included within this Standard. The Standard also provides guidance to building owners and others who are seeking or specifying such services.
