This part of the standard describes accelerated methods for testing corrosion resistance of coatings. Accelerated corrosion testing may be carried out to evaluate the behaviour of a given coating under service conditions, to compare different coatings under comparable conditions, or to evaluate the same coating in varying thicknesses. Three broad types of test are in use, i.e. humidity, neutral and modified salt sprays, and sulphur dioxide. As a number of the aspects of these different tests are common, they are first described in a general sense after which the particular aspects of each will then be considered separately. Immediately prior to corrosion testing each specimen shall be cleaned as described in Clause 1.3 of Part 1.
