The Australian Rolling Stock Standard 7531:2015 describes the requirements for lighting and rolling stock visibility. This documents applies to new and existing locomotive, freight, passenger and infrastructure maintenance rolling stock and is applicable for rolling stock operating up to 160 km/h nominal maximum speed. The document covers the design, construction and maintenance of rolling stock but does not include operation of the rolling stock. The standard describes acceptable good practice such as the fitment of at least one white headlight arrangement, and two white visibility lights at the leading end, and a red tail light on the trailing end of a train. It also describes recommended better practices such as specifying best practice lighting intensities, and positioning of lighting on the rolling stock. The AS 7531 standard is expected to provide safety benefits in that proper lighting and visibility performance significantly contribute to the prevention of collisions (vehicular and pedestrian) by providing controls for the hazards listed in the text and enumerated in the appendix. Adequate interior, access, coupler, and work lighting will provide measurable safety benefit to operators, and other workers both on, and in close proximity to rolling stock vehicles.AS 7531 was developed using Australian (including company specific) and international standards as a baseline, including but not limited to;- AS 1680.2 Interior lighting - AS 4292 Railway safety management- AS 7501 Railway rolling stock - Rolling stock acceptance- APTA standard SS-PS-004-99 Standard for low-location access path marking- UK RSSB standard GM/RT 2483 Visibility requirements for trains- BS EN 13272:2012 Railway applications — Electrical lighting for rolling stock in public transport systems- Australian Government Australian Design Rules for road vehicles (ADR) - US Code of Federal Regulations 49 CFR.
