Two procedures. Method A is applicable to cotton and other uncrimped staple fibres. Method B is applicable to twistless combed slivers and prepared rovings in the wollen and worsted systems.

This British Standard describes methods for determination of fibre length by the use of a comb sorter diagram. The following two procedures are described.

  1. Method A is applicable to samples composed of individual fibres, particularly to samples of cotton fibres, and to samples of waste silk and uncrimped staple fibres having a fibre length of approximately 50 mm.

NOTE 1 For longer types of waste silk and staple fibre, the technique for arranging the test specimen in the form of a continuous sorter diagram becomes progressively more difficult. Only specially skilled operators can make satisfactory sorter diagrams on samples containing many fibres of 100 mm or more in length. Moreover, the time required to make a test increases steadily with increasing fibre length of sample.

  2. Method B is applicable to twistless combed slivers and prepared rovings of a type used in the woollen and worsted systems.
