Gives methods for the acquisition of data which provide descriptors that enable a description of the environmental noise in a specified area of land to be made in a uniform way and the compatibility of any land use activity or projected activity to be assessed with respect to existing or predicted noise. Covers references, definitions, acquisition of data, determination of long-term average sound level and long-term average rating level, prediction of noise levels, noise zones, representation of results, information to be recorded and information to be reported.

This part of ISO 1996 describes methods for the acquisition of data which provide descriptors that enable

  1. a description of the environmental noise in a specified area of land to be made in a uniform way;
  2. the compatibility of any land use activity or projected activity to be assessed with respect to existing or predicted noise.
