Preface This is the third edition of CSA/ANSI Z21.1 • CSA 1.1, Household cooking gas appliances . It supersedes the previous editions published in 2018 and 2016. Major changes to this edition include the following: a) Added criteria for altitude of testing. b) Added an annex on input calculations (Annex G). c) Updated requirements for automatic gas ignition systems. d) Updated requirements of reaching for controls or performing cooking operations. e) Updated sponge wash requirements. f) Added additional requirements for oven rack loading. g) Updated requirements for hot coil ignition testing. h) Updated requirements for surface temperature measurements. This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was prepared by the Z21/CSA Joint Subcommittee on Standards for Domestic Gas Ranges, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Bi-National Gas Appliances and Related Accessories and the Strategic Steering Committee on Standards for Gas Appliances and Related Accessories, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. This Standard has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard. Scope 1.1 Applicable equipment This Standard applies to newly produced household cooking gas appliances, hereinafter referred to as units or appliances, constructed entirely of new, unused parts and materials, and either floor-supported or built-in. 1.2 Household cooking gas appliances This Standard applies to household cooking gas appliances a) for use with natural gas; b) for use with manufactured gas; c) for use with mixed gas; d) for use with propane gas; e) for use with LP gas-air mixtures; f) for use with either natural, manufactured, or mixed gas and convertible for use with propane gas; g) for manufactured (mobile) home installation for use with propane gas only (see Clause 4.1.29); h) for manufactured (mobile) home installation for use with either natural, manufactured, or mixed gas and convertible for use with propane gas (see Clause 4.1.29); i) for recreational park trailer installation for use with natural, manufactured, or mixed gases and convertible for use with propane gas (see Clause 4.1.29); and j) provided with pyrolytic self-cleaning oven features or self-cleaning broiler features, or both (see Clause 4.1.30). 1.3 Electrical requirements The electrical sections of this Standard are unique to the United States and cover all electrical equipment, wiring, and accessories built-in or supplied for use with an appliance. This Standard covers only appliances having current limitations of 20 A and whose electrical equipment, wiring, and accessories are installed in accordance with NFPA 70. For Canada, the electrical portions of the electrical equipment, wiring, and accessories built-in or supplied for use with an appliance are covered under CSA C22.2 No. 3 or CSA C22.2 No. 60335-2-102. This Standard covers a) appliances that use only gas for cooking and that are designed for connection to nominal 120 V electrical supplies; or b) appliances that also use electrical energy for cooking and that are designed for connection to either nominal 120 or 240 V electrical supplies. 1.4 Outdoor cooking gas appliances Outdoor cooking gas appliances are covered in ANSI Z21.58 • CSA 1.6. 1.5 Compact cooking gas appliances Compact cooking gas appliances for installation in recreational vehicles, including recreational park trailers, are covered in ANSI Z21.57 or CAN1.1.16. 1.6 Items unique to Canada Annex A contains items that are unique to Canada. 1.7 Conversion kits Special construction provisions applicable to an appliance designed for use with an optional conversion kit are outlined under Annex B. 1.8 Smart-enabled appliances Annex H contains provisions that are applicable to smart enabled appliances. 1.9 Terminology In this Standard, \"shall\" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; \"should\" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and \"may\" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.10 Units of measurement The values given in US customary units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only. 1.11 Pressure references Throughout this Standard, gauge pressures are designated in pounds per square inch (psi) and kilopascals (kPa). The terminology \"psig\" is not used. Where \"psi\" is used, it is understood to be pound per square inch gauge.
