Preface This is the second edition of the Standard for Hermetic Refrigerant Motor-Compressors, published under the dual designation CSA-C22.2 No. 140.2-96 and UL 984. This Standard will supersede the following Standard: (a) CSA Standard CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 140.2-M91; and (b) UL Standard 984, Sixth Edition, October 31, 1991. This Standard addresses safety requirements and industry concerns for hermetic refrigerant motor-compressors. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 This Standard applies to hermetic refrigerant motor-compressors (hereinafter referred to as motor-compressors) rated 7200 V or less, for use in air-conditioning and refrigerating equipment that comply with the Standards applicable to such equipment. 1.2 This Standard also applies to motor protection systems that may be provided with motor-compressors. 1.3 This Standard does not include additional requirements applicable to equipment designed for use in hazardous locations as defined in the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70-1996, and the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I. 1.4 The values given in SI (metric) units are the standard.
