Testing is intended to provide information on how a stone behaves when it is subject to the cyclic action of freezing and thawing. Since stresses on the stone due to frost depend amongst other things on the degree of water saturation as well as the rate of cooling, several test methods are described. The freeze-thaw cyclic test can be tailored to particular application by the choice of the appropriate method, this choice being dependent on the standards dealing with requirements that are applicable in each particular case.
