Diese Internationale Norm enthält die allgemeinen Festlegungen für Mehrmoden- und Einmoden-Lichtwellenleiter. Die Rahmenspezifikationen für jede der vier Mehrmodenklassen A1, A2, A3 und A4 enthalten spezifische Anforderungen für jede Klasse. Eine Rahmenspezifikation für alle Einmodenklassen enthält gemeinsame Anforderungen für alle Einmoden-Lichtwellenleiter. Innerhalb jeder Rahmenspezifikation enthalten Familienspezifikationen - in Form von Nationalen Anhängen - Anforderungen für die anwendbaren Unterklassen. Diese Unterklassen unterscheiden sich durch unterschiedliche Fasertypen oder Anwendungen.
